Medicine 2.0
The medicine 2.0 conference is actually held in Toronto. Unfortunately I cannot be there. At the same time, our project is presented at a podcast conference in a much smaller city in Germany - Osnabrück, by my colleague Joachim Plener. I cannot be there either. My children should not miss me and a lot of work at the ward and my colleagues wondering about me traveling all the time.

Patient education
I was wondering about how much do our students learn about patient education which plays certainly a major role in our field of industrial medicine, although I hate the word ‘education’ which sounds kind of one-directional. I found a very good and interesting blog which deals with it and must admit, that I do not know exactly, what we teach when we are working with papercases in PBL. Far more interesting is the fact, what do patients with us, how are they using new technologies to talk to us and the one hand. Where comes this thought from? The majority of my colleagues is not interested or refuses to adopt new learning styles and tools (e.g. internet or even worse) neglect their existence. So what are they knowing from their patients and what interests them from the world outside which rules our patients. Furthermore what do the patients which do not have access to that technologies to get informed?

Conference on Blogs and Wikis and social software
Last week I visited the republica conference, a german conference on social media. I received some very interesting suggestions concerning the use of web 2.0 applications in medical education. It is only the lack of time which keeps me from trying it directly with my students in the new semester which begins next week. Especially Twitter seems very useful in getting connected with members of my working group.

Funding sources for medical education research projects?
These complaints about the lack of funding sources especially for young scientist in the Uinted States mentioned in Scienceblog are everyday life in Germany. Funding sources on the field of medical education are extremly rare. I wonder wether there is a difference in other countries on this topic.

MedEdPortal ist a website which provides medical educational ressources. Do we need these collections of materials or does any university or even any department of each university produce its own materials. In my opinion and even from that what I know from our university there is a whole universe of learning materials behind the (fire)-walls of all those teachers. They have fear for al lot of reasons to offer their learning stuff on the web. When you look further, must of that what you can find arescripts and handouts from textbooks. What is the advantage of these materials instead of a complete textbook where I can extract what I would need with my own style.
